Summary

oad accidents in India claim the lives of more than 1 lakh people annually. Most of them are young and this, thereby, robs the country of productive individuals who could have contributed to the growth of the nation. While India has one percent of the global vehicle population it has six percent of global road trac accidents. It was imperative to come up with a data based solution to address this human loss, and for that, the rst step was authentic data collection. Integrated Road Accident Database (iRAD), an initiative of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), Government of India, funded by World Bank and supported by Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras and National Informatics Centre Services Incorporated (NICSI) aims at building credible databases and for establishing a uniform accident data collection mechanism for India.
