Establishment of a Comprehensive Lactation Management Centre for Newborns in Jalgaon District-

Innovative Initiative

Under the District Annual Plan (General) 2023-24 of the Government of Maharashtra, an ambitious initiative has been taken to establish a Comprehensive Lactation Management Centre for Newborns in Jalgaon district. The main objective of this scheme is to provide proper nutrition to newborns and improve their health.

Implementing Mechanism – District Surgeon, Jalgaon.

Objective of the Scheme:

A lactation centre will be established in Jalgaon district through this scheme. The primary objective is to improve the health of underweight and malnourished children by providing breast milk.

Government Decision related to the scheme:

The Government of Maharashtra, Public Health Department has approved this scheme vide Government Decision No. Arthsam 2020/Pr.No.73/Budget dated 09.11.2021. Under this, this scheme is being implemented as per the guidelines of the Central Government.

Activities to be carried out under the scheme:

• Breast milk collected from mothers will be provided to needy newborns through proper processing.

• This milk will be stored scientifically and provided after checking for safety.

• Special attention will be given to improving the health of newborns and reducing the risk of infectious diseases.

Expected results:

This scheme will help in reducing the mortality rate of newborns. With the implementation of comprehensive breastfeeding centers in Jalgaon district, milk collected from mothers will be easily available to needy children.

Achievements achieved under the scheme:

• Total milk collected: 5,05,585 milliliters

• Donor mothers: 1160

• Babies supplied: 1170

The scheme is still being implemented continuously and newborns are getting the benefit of this initiative.

Conclusion:

This scheme implemented in Jalgaon district is a significant step towards improving the health of newborns. Due to comprehensive breastfeeding centers, newborns will get proper nutrition and thus their health will be better. Through such innovative schemes, there will be major improvements in the public health system in the district.
